Michigan Budget on Course for $7 Billion Rise Under Republicans

The Michigan House just passed its version of the state budget for the fiscal year that begins next Oct. 1. The House proposes spending a total of $55.0 billion, up from $54.5 billion this year. If federal dollars are excluded, state spending from state tax and fee revenues will increase from $31.5 billion to $32.3 billion.

ForTheRecord says: If the House budget were enacted as it now stands, it will be the fifth consecutive year of spending increases with Republicans controlling the House, Senate and governor's office. Since Gov. Rick Snyder's first budget went into effect in October 2011, total state spending will have risen $7.4 billion, from $47.6 billion to $55 billion. Much of this 16 percent increase will have been due to more federal money flowing into the state under the Obamacare Medicaid expansion.

When federal dollars are excluded, state spending from state sources will have increased from $27.9 billion to $32.3 billion, a rise of about 15 percent since October 2011.
