The city of Troy has postponed enforcing the controversial "distracted driving" law until Jan. 1, police said.

The city had said it planned to start enforcement Oct. 1 but hasn't put up the signs warning of the new law around the city, according to Lt. Bob Redmond, public information officer for the police department.

Redmond said there would be signs up at every major road entrance into the city.

The ordinance has three parts.

The first bans texting while driving, which is the same as the state law.

The second bans the hand-use of a cell phone.

The third includes behavior that makes motorists unable to maintain control of their car. That could be combing your hair or putting on makeup or eating or drinking.

Troy police will also patrol the six-mile stretch of I-75 that goes through city limits, Redmond said. He said he didn't think it would be a targeted enforcement but rather something where a police office noticed while on the highway.

"It will be a, 'as you see it going by' type of thing," Redmond said.
