Some Small Tax Breaks, But Total State Tax Collections Rise Faster

Gov. Rick Snyder opposes a modest cut in the state income tax, in part because he says taxpayers are already due to collect $875.9 million in new tax credits and exemptions in 2020.

Not said was how much more revenue the state expects to collect that year: It’s $2.48 billion above what’s currently collected. Thus, even with $875.9 million in tax relief for some but not all taxpayers, the state will have $1.69 billion more to spend in 2020.
