Detroit Teachers Can Soon Protest Without Threat of Losing Their Jobs

The controversial (and now former) union president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, Steve Conn, was recently ousted from the American Federation of Teachers affiliate.

The Detroit News reports: Retired teacher Frank Squeo of Clinton Township is urging teachers to withhold their DFT dues. “I think Steve should be our president and those teachers who feel the same should stop paying their dues,” he said.

ForTheRecord says: Thanks to the state’s right-to-work law, they soon can withhold dues without being fired. The DPS teachers' contract was signed in 2012 before right-to-work became law and ends in 2016. Teachers can find an example of an opt-out form here.
