In A Long History Of Michigan School Shootings, Oxford Was Different

From masked students shooting up a hallway to a police officer’s accidental firearm discharge

In the wake of the Oxford school shooting, The New York Times ran a Dec. 7 op-ed written by a teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. It carried the headline, “Will My Students Ever Know A World Without School Shootings?”

To answer that question would require a precise definition of a “school shooting.”

In Parkland, Florida, the term “school shooting” conjures up the nightmare reality of a 19-year-old former student entering a high school and indiscriminately shooting 34 people, of whom 17 died.

That type of shooting is similar to the Nov. 30 Oxford, Michigan, school shooting, in which 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley shot 11 people in what appears to be an indiscriminate selection of victims. Four of those people died.

The Parkland and Oxford shootings were both similar to and different from the 1999 Columbine High School tragedy in which two teenagers shot and killed 12 students and one teacher.

But a review of available data on shootings that occurred on or near K-12 school property in Michigan over the past 50 years reveals that the Oxford shooting may have been unique in this state’s history. Columbine, Parkland and Oxford appear to have in common the fact that a shooter had the intent of indiscriminately killing people.

The overwhelming majority of school shootings in Michigan over the past 50 years, by contrast, have been either gang-related or involved some type of previous dispute between parties, leading to gunfire.

Only a few Michigan school shootings since 1970 have had such a high profile.

In 1978, a 15-year-old student at Everett High School in Lansing who was known for wearing a Nazi pin and talking about Adolf Hitler was jeered by classmates. That student was described by authorities as “a brilliant loner,” according to news accounts. The student had a dispute with a classmate who was taunting him; he took out a gun and shot and killed the classmate and injured a second student.

According to news accounts, a doctor who examined the shooter said he had an extremely rare form of mental illness and was a “true paranoiac.” The Ingham County prosecutor declared the student mentally ill. The student entered a no-contest plea and was sentenced to 3 ½ years of court-supervised mental health treatment. There was concern if he was tried in court, he would be found not guilty by reason of insanity and then released.

In 1993, a Chelsea teacher walked out of a grievance meeting, returned with a pistol, and shot and killed the school superintendent. He also wounded a principal and a teacher who was the union representative. After the shooting, the shooter went to nearby science lab and sat quietly, looking over papers until the police chief found him and arrested him, according to news reports.

In 1992, three gunmen wearing ski masks shot six students with buckshot at 11 a.m. in the hallway of Finney High School in Detroit.

But in the 1980s and 1990s, school shootings were not rare in the city of Detroit. In fact, three separate school shootings occurred on a single day: March 27, 1995. And according to news reports at that time, police believed the masked gunmen who opened fire at Finney High School were involved in gangs.

Determining how many school shootings there have been in Michigan depends on what exactly is the definition of a “school shooting.”

Several national databases track what their creator defines as a school shooting. A database assembled by the Advanced Thinking in Homeland Security program at the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security, appears to be the most ambitious. The K-12 School Shooting Database, as it is known, is the most comprehensive collection of articles about events that occurred before news articles became accessible on the internet.

This database records 82 times in Michigan when “a gun is brandished, is fired, or a bullet hits school property for any reason, regardless of the number of victims, time of day, or day of week.”

Though it has a wide scope, the K-12 School Shooting Database is by no means all-encompassing.

According to it own description, “The database compiles information from more than 25 different sources including peer-reviewed studies, government reports, mainstream media, non-profits, private websites, blogs, and crowd-sourced lists have been analyzed, filtered, deconflicted, and cross-referenced.”

The database lists no shooting incidents on school grounds in Michigan in the years 1979-1981. But a quick search on the archives of Newspapers.org discovered that on May 2, 1980, the Detroit Free Press reported a 17-year-old was shot while leaving Northwestern High School around 1:45 p.m.

And the database is spotty when it comes to tracking older shootings, which is problematic for researchers before the arrival of the internet.

The Naval Postgraduate School’s database had no incidents for 1973. A search in Newspapers.com of the terms “school shooting” for that year uncovered at least two shootings on school property not included in the database.

For instance, the Detroit Free Press reported that in April 1973, a student at Detroit Northeastern High School fired a gun, shattering a door glass and injuring a teacher’s aide. Two students were arguing outside the school building, and one of them pulled out a gun and fired. That shooting is not in the database.

The Detroit Free Press reported on Nov. 29, 1973, that a 15-year-old girl was shot in the leg in a hallway of Detroit Northwestern High School. According to the article, she walked into the hallway and was hit by a bullet intended for another student. That shooting is also not in the database.

Michigan Capitol Confidential is publishing all the data on school shooting incidents from the websites Everytown for Gun Safety and the K-12 School Shooting Database.

The answer to the New York Times op-ed’s question of whether there will ever be a world without school shootings, history shows there is a long list of school shootings.

In 1927, a 15-year-old girl was shot during rifle practice at Central High School in Detroit. She was examining her score when another member of the class shot a weapon, and a bullet struck her in the leg.

In 1932, a 7-year-old boy was shot dead by his 5-year-old classmate, who had brought a pistol to the St. Francis Parochial School in Detroit and was playing with it.

In 1937, a 12-year-old boy shot the principal of a Toledo school and then tried to commit suicide by shooting himself in the head. He survived. The boy said he wanted to force the principal to drive him and a girl he had a crush on to a store and buy them ice cream cones.

In 1939, a 9-year-old accidentally shot his 8-year-old cousin during recess while the two were on the Covert school grounds in South Haven.

In 1956, a 14-year-old shot a fellow student in the back of the neck and mouth during math class at Edmore High School in Stanton in what one report labeled a “grudge match.”

In 1968, a ninth-grader shot five students at Willow Run High School, just as classes had finished. No one died, but three students were taken to the hospital. The superintendent said there was a dispute among the individuals and it was not race-related.
