Michigan State Police lead state fleet in miles driven

Cops logged 21M miles in 932 autos for 2025, most out of 45M driven by 2,047 high-mileage state vehicles

State of Michigan employees drove 2,047 vehicles more than 15,000 miles per vehicle in fiscal year 2025.

These 2,047 vehicles — roughly 15% of the state’s approximately 14,000-vehicle fleet — represent the vehicles that were driven the most miles in fiscal year 2025.

Those 2,000+ vehicles collectively logged more than 45 million miles, according to the 48-page document obtained by Michigan Capitol Confidential through a records request from the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget.

Employees logged more than 45 million miles across 20 agencies and a few colleges in 2025. Records show that the Michigan State Police has the most vehicles driven the most miles. The department alone logged 21,053,778 miles in 2025.

The data highlights the heavy demands placed on state vehicles, which are used for law enforcement patrols, natural resource management, health and human services visits, corrections oversight, transportation infrastructure work, and regulatory enforcement.

State employees drive statewide for purposes including management of natural resources, policing drivers, verifying state-issued licenses for businesses, and more.

  • The Michigan State Police listed 932 vehicles that traveled more than 15,000 miles. One vehicle listed more than 58,000 miles driven in one year.
  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources listed 228 vehicles that were driven more than 15,000 miles. One vehicle was driven more than 38,000 miles.
  • The Department of Health and Human Services listed 192 vehicles that were driven more than 15,000 miles that year. One vehicle was driven more than 48,000 miles.
  • The Department of Corrections listed 172 vehicles that were driven more than 15,000 miles that year. One vehicle added more than 67,000 miles.
  • The Michigan Department of Transportation listed 163 vehicles that were driven more than 15,000 miles in 2025. The top vehicle was driven more than 65,000 miles.
  • The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs listed 103 vehicles that were driven more than 15,000 miles. One vehicle was driven more than 62,000 miles.
  • The Department of Technology, Management, and Budget listed 54 vehicles that exceeded 15,000 miles driven. One vehicle listed having driven more than 72,000 miles.
  • The Michigan State Lottery listed 34 vehicles that were driven more than 15,000 miles, with the highest reaching 54,000 miles that year.
  • The Michigan Department of Agriculture listed 58 vehicles that were driven more than 15,000 miles. One vehicle was driven more than 38,000 miles.
  • The Michigan Department of Energy, Great Lakes, and Environment listed 39 vehicles that were driven more than 15,000 miles. One vehicle was driven more than 39,000 miles.
  • The state of Michigan listed 25 vehicles having driven more than 15,000 miles. The most miles put on a vehicle in that department was 40,000.

Agencies with fewer high-mileage vehicles included the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (17), Department of Attorney General (10), Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (eight), and various education and housing authorities (one to three each). Some universities, such as Wayne State and Northern Michigan University, also reported individual high-mileage vehicles.

  • The Michigan State Housing Development Authority listed three vehicles driven more than 15,000 miles.
  • The education department listed two vehicles driven more than 15,000 miles that year. The top vehicle was driven 19,705 miles.
  • The judiciary listed two vehicles that were driven more than 15,000 miles.
  • The Michigan Veterans’ Facility Authority listed two vehicles that were driven more than 15,000 miles.
  • The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential listed one vehicle that was driven more than 15,000 miles.
