Casino Gambling Yes, Family Gatherings No

Casino taxes a significant source of Detroit’s budget

One of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s recent executive orders limits all indoor gatherings to 10 people or fewer.

Yet, under that same executive order, Detroit casinos will be allowed to open on Aug. 5 at 15% of capacity.

But while Detroit casinos are permitted to operate, bars and taverns all across the state have been prohibited from serving customers inside, and Michigan families can’t have a graduation party in their homes with more than 10 people.

Casino taxes had been providing 17% of the city of Detroit’s general fund revenue, and they were expected to decline by 27% due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
