Michigan’s fleet vehicles used 6.8 million gallons of fuel to travel 117 million miles in fiscal year 2025

One way to measure the size and scope of Michigan’s state government is to look at its vehicle use: the number of vehicles the state owns or leases, how many gallons of fuel those vehicles burn, and how many miles state employees drive. An annual report from the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget provides that information. Michigan’s fleet has about 14,747 vehicles — on-road, off-road, and vehicles that don’t move themselves — according to the 2026 state fleet plan.

State employees rely on central motor pools in Detroit, Lansing, Escanaba, Flint, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, and the State Secondary Complex in Dimondale, according to the report.

Those 218 pool vehicles made 22,751 trips in fiscal year 2025, traveling more than 3.1 million miles.

The state of Michigan leased 9,481 vehicles, the report said, and it owned 5,266 vehicles. In addition, it sometimes reimburses employees who use their own vehicles for official use. In fiscal year 2025, the state paid $5.8 million in reimbursement for 11.5 million miles traveled, using IRS rates to determine payment.

In fiscal year 2025, the state’s leased fleet burned 6.8 million gallons of fuel to travel over 117 million miles.

In the state fleet, 2,047 vehicles travelled more than 15,000 miles each in fiscal year 2025.

These 2,047 vehicles make up roughly 15% of the state’s approximately 14,000-vehicle fleet. The Michigan State Police fleet drives the most, with its vehicles logging 21,053,778 miles in 2025.

The Department of Technology, Management, and Budget maintains a fleet garage in Dimondale, southwest of Lansing, staffed by 25 full-time employees. Records for fiscal year 2025 show it performed 32,340 jobs, broken out in the following categories:

• Preventative maintenance: 2,166

• Tires: 3,949

• Brakes: 1,591

• Body and glass: 1,626

• Miscellaneous repairs: 4,879

• Assignments, terminations, disposals: 17,198

• Parts repair, parts distribution: 24

• Towing service and transport: 483

• GPS installations: 424

In fiscal year 2025, the fleet garage expenditures were $4.8 million.
